Achievements
Wayne Lockey began racing in 2001 in the Formula 2 sidecar class and made an immediate impression, taking the Best Newcomer Award in the NGRRC championship. Over the next few years Wayne was to become a regular winner on the club scene.
In 2006 Wayne made his debut at the Isle of Man TT and came home best newcomer with a lap at over 101mph to his credit on the World’s most demanding circuit.
Continuing success at club level has followed over the ensuing years and Wayne became a regular and consistent performer at the TT and the Southern 100, also held on the Isle of Man.
Although having the necessary talent, lack of funding had always prevented Wayne from pursuing a championship but he put this right in 2011 winning the East Midlands Racing Association title – determination overcoming lack of finances.
In 2012 he achieved a personal best at the Southern 100, a televised meeting rapidly growing in stature, with a fine 4th place in a field containing two World Champions. Eurosport televised the meeting and Wayne featured prominently in the coverage.
The 2013 season proved to be arguably Wayne’s most successful to date. Contesting the well subscribed British Motor Cycle Racing Club championship he faced stiff opposition all year but came out on top, clinching the championship at the Brands Hatch finale. On the roads he broke into the top ten at the Isle of Man TT, now regarded as the most important sidecar race on the calendar, with an excellent 8th place and a personal best lap of over 108mph. He backed this up with another 4th place at the Southern 100, once again with two World champions in the field.
In 2014, Wayne teamed up with 28 year old Leeds lad Mark Sayers, who had extensive experience in many high profile races, the F2 British round, TT, Southern 100, all of which he acheived some fantasic results and proved to be the perfect partenership for Wayne.
Together, they acheived some amazing results......6th and 8th in the TT, 5th and 3rd at the Southern 100 and 2014 BMCRC Champions!! (Top 10 in the World and a Podium! The best so far!)
For 2015, they had some great finishes, two top tens at the TT and two top fives at the Southern 100, also, a tenth place in the British Championship. Blighted by unfortunate and unlucky break downs, the Team had to take the finishes they were able to produce and focus on their next season.
2017 saw a mixed bag of finishes for Wayne, the TT left a bitter taste with a fuelling issue and engine problems, having said that still two top ten finishes, the Southern 100 was undoubtably the best results to date with a 3rd place in the first race and 2nd in the second race. As a highly professional team, we strive to get the best results and the finishes we have worked so hard for. They certainly don't come easy, especially on the Island!!
2018 would have been a fourth season for Wayne and Mark together, unfortunately not to be this season, however, Real Racing continues, and we have to move on and concentrate on aiming for the highest finishes that we can. With the exceptional talent of Wayne in the drivers seat, and the highly supportive network of team and followers around us, we know that is a bright and successful future that Real Racing has in store!!
2019 we welcomed Mark back and started the season on our very new and untested LCR. Wow , what a challenge for the team! Having the outfit was an extraordinary move forward for Wayne as it gave him the potential to race even faster with the new chassis that handled so differently. The set up of the outfit was to prove very trying for the short circuits, and dispite the effort of both Wayne and Mark, the results were proving hard to acheive. Heading to the TT, they were still aiming for a good, safe finish, and that’s what they did, 12th and 13th, very respectable and a huge learning curve with the outfit. The Southern 100 saw a result of 9th place which on these roads proved very challenging!
2020 was one to forget for most of us!! We had a couple of outings in between lock downs, Mallory Park with Mark and another trip to the Leicestershire circuit with Joe Newbold, a talented solo rider but also a great stand in passenger and good friend. The road races were cancelled so we all were having melt downs, missing the Island and the Mountain course!
2021 was heading in a positive direction, first round was at Donnington Park , in preparation for the TT, however, Covid decides to change that again for us all! No roads this year again, very dissapointing for everyone. A trip to Mallory with Mark in July was to be the biggest change for Real Racing and a big turn around for the team. Mark decided to leave the team as he found it harder to commit his time to the racing and was not getting the buzz anymore. We had an amazing few years with Mark, and Sarah in our team and we would like to thank them for all of their hard work, dedication and friendship, which will continue into the future!!
Moving forwards, Real Racing was on the look out for another experienced and particular type of passsenger to be a part of the team. After a trip to Cadwell Park Sidecar Festival in August, we had some excellent testing time with Jake Louther, which made an exceptional difference to the outfits handling. Learning new set up ways for the LCR was what Wayne needed to bring back the confidence he needed. Many thanks to Jake, John and the Louther team for their help!
A trip to Croft circuit allowed Wayne to search for more answers and he managed to get a couple of passengers on board for some much needed track time!
After much hunting, we have been proud to welcome Benjamin Binns to the team for the 2022 season, in which we will contest the British Championship. Ben has masses of experience and is a fantastic asset to the team! We all met up for the last round of our season which was the Sidecar Burnup at Lydden Hill, which proved to be one of the best weekends racing for the LCR set up and we came away with 3 first place finishes!
For the 2022 roads, The Isle of Man TT and Sothern 100, Matthew Rostron will be by Waynes side and we welcome him to Real Racing with the promise of fast and safe racing, with the best results we can acheive. Matthew has joined us from Team Louther and we are proud to have him on board. Along with the sidecar racing, Matthew will be taking on his solo career too which we wish him the very best with.
2023……. Some racing will be nice!! Ben and Matthew are joining us once again (thank goodness!) for this season and we are on track for some fast and safe racing in the British Championship, the Isle of Man TT and the Southern 100. Last season left us with a rather bitter taste in our mouths and we’re putting it behind us now. A solid 12th place finish at the TT and 4th and 5th at the Southern 100 but with so many engine failures we had no luck at the British rounds so its time to give it another go and get this outfit up the front where we belong!
Follow our blog for all the lastest updates which i will endevour to refresh after each event.
